Saint Joseph Novena: Day Two

Saint Joseph is the patron saint of adoptive parents. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has a series of prayers for individuals or families touched by adoption.

Reflection:

“Mary was betrothed to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found with child through the Holy Spirit. Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man, yet unwilling to expose her to shame, decided to divorce her quietly.

“Such was his intention when, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, ‘Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her. She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.’ All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet. ‘Behold, the virgin shall be with child and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel,’ which means ‘God is with us.’

“When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took his wife into his home.”

Matthew 1:18b-24

Saint Joseph is not the biological father of Jesus, yet he cared for Him as a loving parent. When he is mentioned in the Gospel accounts of Jesus’ childhood, Joseph is always depicted as a man of honor, sincerity, and devotion. For these reasons, Saint Joseph is the patron saint of adoptive parents.

Prayer:

O Saint Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God, I place in you all my interests and desires.

O Saint Joseph, assist me by your powerful intercession and obtain for me from your Divine Son all spiritual blessings through Jesus Christ, Our Lord; so that having engaged here below your heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of Fathers.

O Saint Joseph, I never weary contemplating you and Jesus asleep in your arms; I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Press Him in my name and kiss His fine head for me, and ask Him to return the Kiss when I draw my dying breath. Amen.

O Saint Joseph, hear my prayers and obtain my petitions. O Saint Joseph, pray for me. (Mention your intention.)

Amen.
